Visiting Teckler in May 2018
On May 19, 2018, after our third MasterPeaceWalk, we visited Teckler again. The trip through the hills north-east of Nairobi was even more beautiful than last year. After months of lots of rain the area is beautiful green, with plenty of flowers, birds and butterflies.
Arriving at MITABONI ABC GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL there was a disappointment: Teckler was not there. That very day she was in a mathematics competition in Machakos, where the best mathematics students from all A.B.C. schools in the region were competing against each other. Teckler is very good at mathematics and was selected for the team that would represent her school.
While teacher of duty Flora did her best to make contact with the mathematics teacher of Teckler, we had the opportunity to visit the science and chemistry classrooms. At our last visit they were closed, but they were open. Students were working hard and with a lot of pleasure. And that on Saturday! The girls really liked to show us their work and of course all wanted us to take pictures! And so our visit to the school became very nice and interesting.
Meanwhile there was contact with master Tom and he was expecting us at MUVUTI BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL, where the mathematics competition took place. It was impressive to see hundreds of students from different schools from all over the region, all with their own school buses, coming together on a Saturday to compete in mathematics.
Teckler was very excited to see us. She knew we were coming, but she didn’t know on which day. She is doing well, is getting good marks and looks very happy.
We think she is in the right place at this school. The students have to work hard, but the atmosphere is very relaxed and that has a positive effect on Teckler. She is obviously less shy than during our previous visit and has more self-confidence. So it was very nice to see her and speak with her again.
We hope that her development will continue in this successful way.
We thank all the sponsors for making it possible for Teckler to attend this school and we hope we can also offer her further education after High School.
